Culture reporter Molly Young is leaving The Daily to be a freelancer. She’s the fourth staffer to leave The (young) Daily, and the third from the Sasha Frere-Jones’ culture desk. Which raises two thoughts: 1) Man, we knew people were gonna flee The Daily fast. And they are. 2) What are you doing to your people, Sasha?

The Electronic Publishing Bingo Card:

For those of you unfamiliar with the “Bingo Card” concept, basically, if you see one or more of your favorite arguments for how ZOMG EPUBBING WILL CHANGE THE WORLD FOR EVAR on the bingo card, you can be assured that your argument is not, in fact, anywhere as good (or original) as you might think it is. You might wish to cultivate new ones, or at least learn why your favorite argument isn’t always super-mega-ultra-convincing to those of us who have to think about this stuff as it regards our professional lives.

For those who will inevitably be new to the site, and may spittle-fling because they are e-pub partisans, be aware the author of this bingo card is not hostile to electronic publishing, since among other things he was one of the early examples of successful electronic self-publishing, as well as an example of migrating self-published work into the conventionally published realm, andstill self-publishes electronically when the mood strikes him. He does occasionally get tired of hearing the same e-publishing arguments, some a decade old now, presented as This Year’s Model. Dudes, sorry. Trade them in.

Pure bloody brilliance.

I used to have a difficult time reading a book on my iPad before bed, even on the lowest brightness setting. The eerie glow, no matter how faint, would slowly but surely sap the tiredness away from me. The next thing I knew it would be three in the morning and I would be wide awake.

Now, when I’m alone, I just leave my bedside light on. With the easy addition of ambient lighting, I don’t get that screen-induced insomnia.

Problem solved!

New iBooks update opens door to fully illustrated publishing:

Apple’s latest version of its iBooks app, which allows e-books to have a pictorial layout similar to printed books and supports full page illustrations, has been hailed by one publisher as being “the beginning of a phenomenally exciting phase in picture book publishing”.

The new version of the online store means all publishers signed up to Apple’s terms on the iBookstore, including HarperCollins, Hachette, Penguin, Pan Macmillan, Canongate and Simon & Schuster, will be able to release fully illustrated e-books.

I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that the sales of picture books have been drooping recently in the UK.

As someone who grew up loving my picture books, I’m very thankful the medium has new market to expand into.

SUNDAY MORNING IPAD SESSIONS

Usually when I’m lounging about in bed on Sunday with my girlfriend, we’ve got our noses in physical books, magazines, newspapers, whatever is to hand really. As I have said before, I don’t like how alienating an iPad can be, especially when the company is that good.

But I failed to mention how that rule goes out the window if she’s still asleep and I’m trying to be oh-so-quiet so she can stay that way.

I always reach for iPad early Sunday mornings, while she got her well-deserved lie-in. It’s the perfect early morning/late night contraption - I can play with it for hours and don’t even have to turn on a light.

This weekend I checked the day’s news and flipped through a few blogs and finished up the final tale from Stephen King’s Full Dark, No Stars, all before she woke! Best of all, I could do most of the surfing, page turning with just one hand (the other was pinned under her sleepy self).

So there.The iPad can be good for relationships, especially if one of you stays up too late and wakes up too early.

Lets put the iPad widow rumours to bed, hey?
